Crookers!!! dj mix download and interview
Who: Crookers
What: DJ Mix Download & Interview
Where: Guvernment Nightclub
When: August 2009
Crookers maybe not be a name you're completely familiar with, but chances are you've heard their ripping electro remix of Kid Cuddi "Day and Night". These Italian monsters have been causing a ruckus in the global dance music scene over the last couple years, having worked with everyone from Armand van Helden to Tocadisco to Bloody Beatroots.
Recently, Nightdreamer sat down with the guys before their show at Skybar in The Guvernment complex. Their English is still a bit rough as they've admittedly only learned the language a couple years ago.

You guys have a full album coming out soon. When's the release date?
Bot: When's the release date?
Phra: It's in January
Bot: It's been delayed a little bit. It's all originals and no remixes. Every track has collaboration with somebody. Every track, for either vocals or production.
What type of artists will we see on there?
Phra: All types. 360 degrees. Some friends, to African people, Brazilian to metal and rock and roll and hip-hop artists.
Bot: yeah, it's 360 degrees of what we like. It's not a dance album. It's really different and every track is different.
15 dates in less than a month: How are you guys handling the tour?
Bot: I dunno. We're tired lol.
Phra: yeah, really tired.
Lots of Redbulls?
Bot: Naw, it doesn't work lol.
Phra: Magnesium and potassium works.
Do you guys miss certain things from back home while touring so much?
Bot: We're just trying to survive.
Phra: We don't stop actually. We tour a lot, then when we go home, we get to produce. It's nonstop. 24 hours a day. But September is free. 1 Month off. No gigs....In the studio? Yeah sure.
Bot: I have so many things to do in September. Everything is all September.
You guys have been to Canada before. How do you enjoy it here?
Phra: They're cool. Always fun. Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary were all good fun. I remember here in Toronto, at the Guvernment was crazy crazy crazy crazy.
You have a wide variety of influences, everything from electro house to fidget to drum and bass. What do you call your own music?
Phra: We don't try and have a name to recognize what we do. But, we just do what we like. It's really difficult to give a name to what we like.
Bot: It depends on what we're listening to at the moment. What we do is influenced by what we listen to. It's kind of random.
Phra: It's random music lol. Random is a good name. Brandon is also a good name...like Brandon from Beverly Hills.
You guys are pretty heavily influenced by hip-hop. What type of hip-hop are you listening to these days?
Phra: We listen to a lot of instrumentals. Stuff like Flying lotus, Madlib & De La Soul, Rustie from Glasgow, Dargen D'Amico is an Italian MC.
Is there a vibrant hip-hop scene in Italy?
Phra: It's not so big. There's maybe three popular MCs.
Bot: We don't always have big hip-hop artists in the charts. In the last 2 years some people are mainstream now.
Phra: There's a lot of pop music.
Bot: It's the same pop music you get over here. Beyonce and all that stuff.
You guys recently did a mix with Kardinal Offishal. How did that come about?
Phra: It's a single off the new album, actually. But email and iChat passing music back and forth.
Bot: We've never actually met. Sometimes we know people for years from email and iChat, but have never actually met. We've never met Kid Cuddi...we're gonna meet him tomorrow for the first time! LOL!
Dj mag top 100 poll recently started. Is this something you guys are thinking about and trying to get votes for?
Bot: The top 100? What's that?
Phra: We're in the top 100? (speaking to Bot)
Bot: Naw, they're voting now.
Phra: Ah lol.
Bot: I want to be #1.
Phra: I want to be #100 or #24 lol. Naw, we really don't give a fuck. But maybe if we're #1
What type of things are you into other than music?
Bot: ah, nothing else lol.
Phra: I can ski. I go skiing in the Alps.
Bot: I snowboard. He used to snowboard, but just got back into skiing.
Cannelloni or manicotti?
Phra: Cannelloni? Yeah. Cannelloni from my Nona
Bot: A nice well cooked spagetti
