Hot Flashes - you need to party

Posted on July 2nd 2009 by Owen Thomas

Who: Hot Flashes
Where: Casbah - 306 King St. West, Hamilton
When: Friday June 26th, 2009

Cole Stephenson, Currently attending  school for music business at the Harris Institute in Toronto & Jason Mante are the main doods behind the growingly popular parties called "Hot Flashes"  They began August 8th 2008 to a modest, but eager to party crowd and have grown into full blown mayhem. The concept was simple; to provide a form of entertainment that was an alternative to what else existed.

Although they both live in Toronto, the choice to host the parties in Hamilton was because of existing relationships established from their band years.

"We started with 5 guys planning the event, but there were too many cooks in the kitchen. The other guys went somewhere else and me and Jay (Jason Mante aka Nights) called the Casbah to do the party, cause we already knew the guys there."

Hot Flashes is a prime example of how youth culture music (rock, hip-hop and electronic) has melded together over the last 4-5 years slowly creating new genres and the rapid growth of cross genre music enthusiast. Cole & Jason are ex members of Roses Dead www.myspace.com/rosesdead, which is a bit of a shock considering the musical base of the "Hot Flashes" parties is electro.

"Jay and I were in this punk/hardcore/metal band and a lot of our friends are doods in bands and chicks that went to (rock) shows. I promoted it to all my friends and that's who showed up. It's so weird that people, who I'd never thought would be into this kind of music, are loving these parties."

The music falls into the category of multiple genres, including electro, indie-dance, ru-rave, nu-disc, electro pop. Djs that have made appearances have include Angelo Nasso, Dirty Shoes, Foulhouse, The Rubdown,  Stab City, and most notably Violca from Mansion.

"It's sweet that it's (electronic dance music) more popular, cause there's more cool parties happening. We don't have to listen to 50 Cent and T.i."

When asked why they do them every 4-6 weeks instead of weekly, their answer was easy. "We thought about doing them weekly, but we think they would stay more special if they were once in a while. People are always waiting for the next one and more eager to come out."

Whatever the reasoning for that decision, it seems to be working.  With crowds literally coming from all over southern Ontario, the word slowly spread around city about the Hot Flashes events."We get people from Toronto, Burlington Oakville, Oakville, Kitchener, Guelph, and St. Catherines. We started with more people coming from out of town then Hamilton's people"

If you're looking for Hot Flashes, cheap booze and electro madness, you've just found you're monthly dose of mayhem.

The first thing I did when I returned to the States was to call on Rachel. Her mother answered the door. Rachel no longer lived there. She had married a medical student she’d met in college. “I thought she wrote you,” her mother said.
