The Marble Index is a successful international band from the roots of Hamilton ON. Their music is known globally and their experience was all made to happen. Their success however, did not begin in Hamilton. Hamilton was only pushing the band back and making it difficult to get any appeal. This problem pushed the band to want more. They found management in England and from there, a base of friends and many fans. They recorded their first EP in Wigan, England, n a barn with no heat or hot water. Why? Because like every struggling musician, glamour is not always so real and fabulous. They needed to escape from their comfort zone and create music outside of their box. Roughing it was all part of their experience, keeping them level headed and down to earth.
From that point the band left the station and have toured with the Pixies across Canada, Germany and Japan. They marked each country with their true crazed soulful rock and kept lifting off from each country to country. They were asked to have their music used for commercials and were placed on Track 16 on Big Shiny Tunes 9. Their biggest surprise was being nominated for the 2005 Juno Awards. As this was all flattering and epic for the band, their dream was never television or commercialized spotlight. They wanted to travel and see the world and show each country how real and dirty they can rock.
The band has planned to start recording again for this fall. They have all cooled their jets for a while, starting new families and working on other music. Brad stated that he has noticed Hamilton is now becoming more of a community of music and that talent is getting a lot more recognition. He has been involving himself in the community and working with various artists. He is playing in another local band called the Spirits, who have recently played at Absinthe with Texas Gold. As for Marble Index the band does not have any future goals at the time. They have been together on a journey for the past 8 years and are now finding time to slow down and relax.
Interviewing Brad was a great pleasure. Not only to get have the chance to write about Hamilton success, but to converse with an artist so down to earth and level headed, it was refreshing. He told me that he was not a popular kid in high school and how funny it was once people in high school noticed him, once he was popular with the media. The song and video of Same Schools is a great example of this reflection. It is a song about growing into his own skin and finding where he stood in life among everyone else. I think we can all relate to that. He said it would be great if we had a revolution of free thinkers, which would result in less judgement. I will add to that point. If you are to think freely you can create positivity. High school is the worst, you can judge anyone, you are free to your own right. However that band geek in high school, could turn out to be the next big deal hooked into your ear.
