Southern Ontario Music Community and the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research Canada are set to partner with Rockin' in the Free World to bring the "Rockin' for Willi Benefit" at Club Absinthe on Friday June 19.
Rockin' in the Free World is an organization that specializes in putting together benefit concerts to help raise awareness about various disorders and illnesses.
"A friend of mine and myself initially started it through university student unions and operated through there for a couple of years," said Co-President and Event Co-ordinator of Rockin' in the Free World Remo Presutti.
"Once we finished, we figured they only way for us to get our name out in the community was to register as a business and make more of a difference."
While they help raise awareness about many disorders these days, they originally started out with only one in mind.
"We had been focusing on Autism and its been changing, but the cause has still been the same. Initially there was a waiting list for children to receive behavioral therapy so what we did was we focused on those children on those lists. We would do a benefit concerts and the money we raised was given directly to the families to use for therapy. After that we started branching out to organizations such as Autism Ontario and McMaster Research Facility. Just this year we decided to change our focus and start looking at another syndrome that was being overlooked, which was our whole idea in the beginning, to raise awareness about various causes through music. "
This time around Rockin' in the Free World is looking to shine the spotlight on Prader-Willi Syndrome.
"It's an eating disorder that's caused by hormonal imbalances in children. They eat and they are never full so they can become morbidly obese," said Presutti.
The Rockin' for Willi Benefit concert will feature several local artists including Live How You Live, Audio to Mute, The Shout, and Melissa Bel for the low cost of ten dollars.
"They are all mostly rock oriented but they have their own style. Some come from a folk background and they've turned it into rock. Others have a funk-blues background, hip-hop, but its all guitar oriented, all rock-based music. It's going to be a great show. All the bands are fantastic," Presutti said.
While all the proceeds from the concert will be donated to FPWRC, this event will also offer an incredible opportunity to raise the awareness to both those directly and indirectly affected by Prader-Willi Syndrome.
"It's amazing how these kinds of [benefits] can spread and how the word really gets out there, which I think is quite impressive. In this city, the music scene is just so viable and very generous with their time. The city should be really proud of that." said Event Promoter Wendy Wolfe.
