Shiloh is Canada's newest young pop singer and songwriter. This British Coumbia native may only be 16 years old, but she has already proven herself well in the music industry. It's not easy being so young in the music scene but Shiloh seems to be managing herself just fine. I had the chance to sit down and chat with Shiloh all about her music, her debut album and her recent Hamilton show.
How did you get your big break into the business?
I have been doing competitions my whole life and I did this one in Edmonton, which I won. It sent me to Vancouver, got some songs recorded, got some radio play, met my managers and then they ended up getting me signed to Universal Music. Now I'm sitting here and it's all so crazy,
You are one of the young singers in the business. Are you glad that you've gotten into the business at this age?
Definitely. When I'm 30 years old, I can say I've been doing this my whole life. When I'm 60, I can tell my children do not ever say you can not do this because I did.
Does being a Canadian artist mean something to you?
I have found that there is a lot of Canadian talent and people do not know about it. It is out there for sure. I love being Canadian. This is such a safe country to me. You do not have to be enrolled in anything you do not want to be enrolled into. It is just chill here.
Tell us a little bit about your album in terms of the style, the messages and the hopes you have for it.
I love how it turned out. People should know that it is a lot about being who you are and saying what you feel because those you matter do not mind and those who mind do not mater. It is a big mash up of different genres and music that are put into me. The style is kind of colourful. It will pop out and say "Hey I'm over here"! I want people to enjoy my music just as much as I enjoy writing it. Music is everybody's life.
How long did it take you to record and put together your album?
It took about two and a half years. We were not even thinking about an album when I started recording in Vancouver. But then once I met my managers and got signed, it went from there.
Your song "Operator" has a very clear message to your fans. But what is the message you hope they get from listening to the song?
I had people in high school tell me that I just was not cool enough. So I just said then you are not good enough for me. No matter what anybody says, just be your self. Don't let anyone bring you down. They are just trying to make themselves feel better because they have issues with their self-confidence. Do not ever let your personality go because it is something very special to you.
It's tough being a girl in the industry, in terms of looking and having the "perfect" body. How are you not letting this affect you?
I have always been the type of person where if I am comfortable with myself, then everything will be fine. If I am not comfortable with the way I look, then I will do something about it. I am not going to change myself to be what somebody else wants because that is just not right.
Are you excited to get on the road?
I am excited for the whole tour. I am excited to get out there, meet the fans, I love the bus life. I will not sleep in a hotel anymore. Just get me on the bus. It is strictly Canadian (dates). I'm looking forward to seeing Canada. I am really looking forward to going out East on the next tour. I heard it is beautiful out there.
You've played with quite a few famous artists like Lady Gaga and Headley. Have any of them taught you anything important about the music industry?
Oh definitely. Lady Gaga and I were talking for a while about keeping your stamina so that you can run around on the stage. Jacob from Headley is a great performer. He also taught me how to keep up my energy level and how you should not drink too many Redbulls before you go on stage.
What can people expect when they show up to see a Shiloh show?
A lot of running around! It is a show filled with lots of energy, jumping up and down and yelling things.
What's next for when you are done touring? Working on new material? Taking a break?
Who knows what is next. I will probably start working on a second album; do some more touring, go down to the States. Who knows what is coming next. All I know is that it is going to be a whirlwind and it is going to be amazing.
