Youth Movement, Your Music, Young Maniacs, YoYo Masters, Your Mistress, Yes Men, Yelling Mothers and my favorite, Yo Mamma; although the title YM remains ambiguous by their choice, YM as a group of djs is quite defined. In less than 2 years they've already played with some of the techno worlds international players like Guido Schneider, Rene Amesz, Oliver Giacomotto and Paco Osuna as well as every major name in the Toronto dance music scene. They've also established themselves as resident djs in North Americas' biggest nightclub, The Guvernment in Toronto.
The group is comprised of three members, Michael "Makett" Terrazzano, Chris "Larse" Larsen and David "Ace" Cinelli. There individual tastes range from Gaiser to Ricardo Villalobos and each bring a unique element and flavor that collectively crates the Explicit Sounds of YM. Their sound can be described as funky bass line driven tech house, with a touch of nostalgia giving the group a crowd friendly dance floor appeal.
Compared to many Toronto based djs, their breakout into the Southern Ontario Dance Music Scene was rapid. Dave credits their swift brand recognition across Ontario, to their heavy involvement in the scene prior to djing. Dave has been a key stone promoter with various Toronto clubs, namely Footwork & The Guvernment and an all around scene supporter in every way possible.
The trio met in 2006. Terrazzano and Larsen were friends since high school and Dave shared a mutual love for very similar music after finding each other frequenting the same after hours clubs across Toronto.
Michael Terrazzano has been working the decks for the longest of the three. His beginnings as a dj were as a mobile wedding dj. There isn't a crowd that has more diverse taste in music than one that attends a wedding. You have to work to keep those dance floors going and you can say Michael became keenly aware of how important programming is to keep the floor alive. Those skills are apparent in his electronic music sets.
Chris Larsen, although carries the least amount of experience of the group, he makes up for it in passion, focus and determination. Drawing inspiration from djs like Ritchie Hawtin and Loco Dice he has quickly risen to a technical skill level few achieve so quickly.
Dave is the more rambunctious in the group, commonly causing a rowdy scene in the booth. When asked what the dig is with the Mexican wrestling mask, Dave answered "We played this gig in Buffalo on Memorial Day weekend. I busted out this Ray Mysterio mask with the American flag on it. They
went fucking nuts! I love wrestling. I used to write for independent wrestling leagues. That shit is wild, bro. If you think the politics in the nightclub industry are bad, you should hear about the shit that goes down in wrestling."
Dance To The Beat is an event that YM holds closest to them. Dave Ace lost his mother to cancer in 2007 and Dance to The Beat is Dave's way of fighting back.
"I tell people don't come for me, come for yourself because everyone has been affected by cancer whether I's them personally or someone they know that's close to them." "I figure we go out to party and spend money every weekend. Why not do it a few times and have the money go to a good cause, you know?" The next Dance to The Beat (boat cruise) is set for August. Visit Nightdreamer.ca/events and we'll have the details posted there.
